Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans.
  2. In a bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
  3. In another bowl, mix vegetable oil, buttermilk, eggs, red food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla extract until blended; stir in purple food coloring.
  4. Gradually mix wet ingredients into dry ingredients until smooth. Divide batter between prepared pans.
  5. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks.
  6. For frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter until creamy; gradually add sifted sugar until fluffy.
